Understanding Acclimatization: Why It Matters!

Have you ever wondered about timber acclimatization? It's a crucial step in ensuring the longevity and stability of your flooring boards.

In essence, flooring acclimatization is the process of allowing floorboards to adapt to the moisture levels in your home's environment before installation.

Why is it necessary?

Flooring has hygroscopic properties, meaning it adjusts its moisture content based on weather conditions. As humidity fluctuates, timber naturally expands and contracts over time. Acclimatizing the boards allows them to reach the moisture level equivalent to your home's conditions before laying.

How long does it take?

For solid timber boards, acclimatization can take over 6 weeks, varying based on your location. Engineered Timber , laminate , spc , vinyls products, however, are more stable, requiring only 24-48 hours to acclimate.

What if you skip this step?

Skipping acclimatization can lead to several issues:

  • Warping: The board edges can lift and twist.
  • Buckling: Boards may pull away from the subfloor.
  • Cupping: Board edges curl higher than the center, forming a cup shape.
  • Crowning: The center of the board becomes higher than the edges, creating a bump.

Excessive moisture during installation can lead to shrinking, causing unsightly gaps in your flooring.
